One of the most refreshing treats we can have in the middle of summer is a nice fruit salad along with the our burgers and hot dogs. When it’s ridiculously hot out, there’s something so satisfying about digging into a full bowl of chilled, juicy fruit—it’s like eating and taking a drink at the same time. Though we all have our own favorite ingredients, a good fruit salad will typically include apple slices, oranges, grapes, melon and maybe even some pineapple. A truly excellent fruit salad, however, will also include kiwi.

Although the taste of kiwi is hard to deny, it’s not the easiest fruit to work with for those who don’t have much experience with it. If you’re not sure how to do it, you can end up coming at it the wrong way and wasting quite a lot of precious fruit. Fortunately, peeling these sweet little fruits couldn’t be easier as long as you know the method. Today, we’re going to show you five simple ways to peel a kiwi. So let’s get started.

1. Use a knife to pare the middle away in one swipe.

Although it may be tempting to come in with an apple peeler and go crazy, you’ll lose a ton of fruit this way. Instead, make two tiny cuts on either end of the kiwi to provide access to the peel. Next, use a knife to start a little cut on one side of the peel and roll the fruit away from you while keeping pressure on it. This way, you can take all the skin off in one pass.

2. Use a spoon!

Similar to the method above, start by cutting the ends off of the fruit. Instead of using a knife to get the rest of the skin off, get a spoon and slide it in between the pulp of the fruit and the skin, carefully shimmying it around until you’ve completely loosened it. At the end, you should be able to pull the fruit clean out of the skin.

3. Use a cup!

Once again, cut the ends off of your fruit. After that, set it with one of the cut sides facing downward and then cut it in half vertically through the middle. Once you’ve done that, get a glass cup and carefully scrape the skin along it while sliding the fruit down. When done correctly, the skin will easily peel away and the fruit will be left in the bottom of the glass.

4. Use the old-fashioned peeler method.

If you’re careful, you can still use an apple peeler to peel your kiwi as well. Still, start by cutting off either end and then work from the top moving downward in thin strips. Take your time so as not to waste any fruit.

5. Use a knife the entire time.

Finally, if you don’t want to use any fancy tricks, you can actually use your knife to peel it the entire time. Start again by cutting off the ends and standing the kiwi up on its side. Next, hold the kiwi in place with one hand and slice delicately down the sides with the other, spinning the kiwi until you get all the skin off.

As you can see, skinning a kiwi is actually quite simple as long as you know what you’re doing. None of these methods is the right or wrong way—whatever works best for you is what you should do! Give these methods a try and let us know what you think!
