Man puts baking soda on $1 steak and end result was more than he bargained for

You can also try to watch videos on Youtube. Aside from recipes, you can there are some food experiments that will give you that aha moment.

A YouTube channel can let you experience that.

It’s Guga Foods and their channel is filled with entertaining and informative videos. Most of the clips are experiments and comparisons of different food and cooking techniques.

They’ve already tried using an air fryer in cooking different meat. They have compared a $1 grilled cheese sandwich with a sandwich that costs $100.

But this particular video would surely catch your attention.

Have you ever tried to put baking soda on steak? Well, this is what they did in the video and the result was really unexpected.

As we all know, baking soda or sodium bicarbonate is oozing with lots of benefits. You can use it for baking, cleaning, and many more.

So now, let’s find out what can baking soda do to a $1 steak. Well, there are many articles that claim that baking soda makes the meat tender.

Going back to the clip, the host separated the steak into three groups.

He called the first one “control” – which is a steak with salt. There’s also “baking soda” – which has baking soda alone.

While the last one is called “baking soda x salt”. From the name itself, the two ingredients were mixed together on the steak.

Then, he placed them in the refrigerator and left them there for four hours except for the control steak which was in the refrigerator for 24 hours.

Then, he compared all of them.

As he checked them, he noticed that the steak with baking soda was soft and tender as the fibers of the meat were separating. While the other one with salt and baking soda was more tender. Amazing!

You’ll get more amazed by how they turned out when they were cooked.

The host washed the meat off. Then, he sprinkled them with salt, black pepper, and garlic powder.

He grilled them and seared them with butter.

The guy called a friend to taste the steak.

The control or the steak with salt wasn’t that tender but really tasted good.

For the second one – which had baking soda, it was really tender but the taste was not desirable.

For the last one, they tried to taste the steak with a combination of baking soda and salt.

It turned out that the meat was a lot more tender than the one with baking soda only.

But how about the taste? Sadly, they didn’t like it, too.

The Verdict

In the end, the most delicious for them was the steak with salt alone although it was not so tender as the other two.

Nevertheless, they have definitely proven that baking soda can really make meats tender.
