Sometimes, food combinations that seem a little unusual end up leading to some of the most delicious flavors. Similarly, there are many classic recipes that we’ve probably had many times in our life that we never put much thought into. What are the secret ingredients that make these meals work so well? The recipe we have for you today is something you’ve probably had before but didn’t know you could make at home—all with the help of a trusty slow cooker.

We’re making a delicious corned beef and cabbage stew with a special ingredient: beer. If you throw in some additional stir-ins, you’ll soon have a savory and delicious meal that the whole family will love.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 1 pound of cooked corned beef, medium diced
  • 1 yellow onion, diced
  • 1 pound of shredded green cabbage
  • 4 cloves of minced garlic
  • 2 carrots, peeled and diced
  • 3 medium yukon gold potatoes, peeled and medium diced
  • 16 ounces of beef broth (low sodium if possible)
  • 8 ounces of water
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 can (16 ounces) of pilsner beer
  • 1 teaspoon of dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons chopped parsley

Here’s what you do:

1. After your beef and vegetables are prepared, throw your beef, onion, cabbage, garlic, carrots, potatoes, beef broth, water, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, oregano and black pepper all into your slow cooker—don’t worry about how it’s in there as it will all combine later. After that’s in there, pour your can of beer on top.

3. Once eight hours have passed, open the slow cooker up and check on your stew! Everything should be softened and blended together. Also be sure that your beef chunks are cooked through. If everything looks good, you’re done! Serve it hot and garnish with your chopped parsley.

This recipe is definitely delicious but it’s also one of the easiest ones we’ve come across! The combination of the beer, veggies and beef makes a unique and authentically Irish flavor that you and the whole family will love. And don’t worry—the slow cooking process will break down any of the residual alcohol left over in the beer. Make this as soon as you can!
