Here’s how to make tasty caramel-stuffed apples this Fall

If there is one fruit that screams Fall, it has to be apples. Full of sweet and tart flavors, these globulous hanging fruits can go good with both sweet and savory meals, or just make a great snack all on their own.

This is to say nothing of how fun they can be during the Fall season. Hard cider fests and apple-bobbing, anyone?

Of course, most people’s favorite food to eat involving apples (aside from the classic Apple pie) comes in the candy-coated variety.

And how do you get them to their “candied” state? By enrobing them in velvety, delicious caramel, of course!

These delectable treats are undoubtedly at the top of the list for just about everyone when it comes to indulging in a tasty, seasonal Fall treat.

They can be customized to include all of your favorite nuts, candies, sprinkles, and more. That’s not to mention how utterly gorgeous they turn out to be.

If you have ever bitten into one of these candied treats, though, then you know how terribly messy they can be.

Sadly, if you or your kiddo can’t handle the whole apple at once, there’s not a lot you can do with it. Sure you can rest it in a nice little cupcake liner or on a dish, but chances are it’s going to fall over, and when that happens, these sticky treats will pick up all the dust, cat hair, and everything else you might find on the floor.

Thankfully, though, some creative sweet-toothers out there have come up with the perfect answer to all that: Caramel stuffed apples.

Also known as inside-out caramel apples, this nifty workaround lets you have all the indulgent qualities of the standard caramel apple without any of the mess.

Plus, because they are cut in half ahead of time, chances are all the treat lovers in your house will be able to eat the whole thing in one sitting, rather than risking any of it going to waste.

For all the littles in your life, you can even cut them into bite-sized wedges to ensure that all the goodies get eaten up.

And the good news is that they are super simple to make!

Now, normally, in order to make the rich, velvety caramel sauce these beautiful fruits get dipped into, you would first have to melt the caramel candies down in a pot on the stove. And you can still take that step if you’d like.

One of the best things about stuffing the caramel inside the apples, though, is that you can skip this step entirely if you’re pressed for time or, well, if you simply don’t feel like doing it.

So, how do you stuff the apple then? Simple- just pack the caramel candies right on in!

Here is what you’ll need:

  • Six large apples of your choosing
  • 1 large bag of your favorite soft caramel candies
  • melted butter
  • cinnamon sugar
  • water
  • chopped nuts, sprinkles, chocolate syrup, crushed candies, or any other of your favorite toppings

We know, we know, that’s a real rough list of ingredients to come up with, but we somehow think you’ll manage.

Step 1- Slice and scoop

The first thing you’ll want to do is preheat your oven to 375℉. Then, cut the apples in half and use a spoon or an ice cream scoop to remove the core and the seeds.

Step 2- Brush and bake

Lay each half of your cored apples into the cavities on a muffin tin. Brush them with melted butter and sprinkle generously with the cinnamon-sugar mix. Next, pour just a small amount of water in each of the apples and bake for 20 minutes.

Step 3- The fill

After you’ve removed your baked apples from the oven, fill each cavity with caramel. Now, you can go one of several ways here.

As we mentioned, you can always melt caramel candies over a stovetop in a double boiler or over very low heat. You can also go the super fancy route and make your own caramel sauce from scratch.

If you’re like us, though, and want to cut out the middleman as much as possible, you can take this tip from the folks over at Delish and just pop a few of the caramel candies right into the apples.

Step 4- Second bake

Bake the caramel stuffed apples once more for about 10 minutes or until the caramel is completely melted.

Then, you can drizzle them with chocolate, extra caramel, or whatever you fancy. Top it off in the same way and voila! Caramel apples sans mess!
