There’s no doubt about it. Starbucks’ Pumpkin Spice Latte (also known as the PSL) has risen to become one of the most popular seasonal drinks in America.
It has even become synonymous with the coming of the fall season and has been anticipated by avid coffee drinkers every year since its initial launch in 2003.
Show us someone who wouldn’t love to have a grande serving of Pumpkin Spice Latte every day.
Reduce your spending – And calories
Unfortunately, going to Starbucks for your daily fix of this tasty drink won’t do your body or your wallet good. A grande serving of Pumpkin Spice Latte contains a whopping 50 grams of sugar. And that doesn’t count for whipped cream calories yet!
What’s more, each cup of this autumn beverage comes at in 310 calories, which is as much as a small meal.
So, save your five-dollar bills and keep your sugar levels stable. We just found a cheaper alternative recipe you can easily make at home.
Homemade Pumpkin Spice Latte Recipe
Note: This recipe was concocted by Jessica Battilana from Today and the measurements are to make one latte.
Ingredients:
- Two shots of espresso
- ¼ teaspoon of nutmeg
- Three whole cloves
- Five allspice berries
- A pinch of ground cinnamon
- One tablespoon demerara sugar
- One cup of 2% milk or 1% milk
Instructions:
- 1. Combine all of your spices (but only ⅛ of the nutmeg), milk, and sugar in a saucepan over medium heat.
- Bring the mixture to a simmer. Turn off the heat, cover the saucepan, and let it cool down for 10 minutes.
- Remove the whole pieces of spices using a spoon.
- In the same saucepan, reheat the milk infused with spices over medium-low heat until hot.
- Using a milk frother (a blender may also work), foam the milk.
- Pour your hot espresso into your preferred drinking mug and top it with the hot milk.
Useful tip: Pour the milk over a spoon to hold back the foam.
- Spoon the separated foam on top and garnish the drink with the remaining ground cinnamon and nutmeg.
- Enjoy your drink while snuggling a fuzzy blanket!
A healthier autumn
By holding back on the whipped cream, it cuts down almost 150 calories from our favorite drink without sacrificing flavor. Using raw sugar also made it a bit healthier as opposed to using regular white sugar. You will also notice that the sugar is cut down from 50 grams (11 teaspoons!) down to a tablespoon (3 teaspoons).
Vegan version
If you want to turn your pumpkin spice latte vegan-friendly, you can substitute your dairy milk with almond or other vegan milk options.

Some people like including actual pumpkins in the drink in the form of pumpkin purees and even pumpkin pie spice. And to make the drink just a bit more indulgent, you can add a dash of coconut whipped cream and some crushed graham crackers to top it off.
