And one of his most popular videos on his YouTube channel shows him teaching how to cut an onion the right way. You may not have ever heard about this method, but it really does work. The next time you are in the kitchen and want to add some onion to a dish, you should give it a try. Here’s what Jack says you should do:
Before you even get your knife out, you need to do the first step: find the root of the onion.
This is the end that looks like it has little roots coming out of it. Once you find it, you should place the onion root-side up. Then, take your knife into your dominant hand. You want to then make an angled cut into the onion near the root. However, you shouldn’t chop all the way through just yet. You just want to get in there with your knife to start out.
Then, you are going to work in a circular motion, making sure to keep that angle you established when you first started the cut.
Move your knife in a circular motion around the root. Why are you doing this? You’re trying to get the bulb out of the onion. Many people don’t know this (even seasoned home chefs), but the bulb of the onion is actually the part that makes you tear up when you start to cut into it. Therefore, if you remove the bulb, you won’t face any issues when you start chopping. By completing the cut in a circular motion, you will have successfully cut out the bulb.
However, you have to do more than just cut it out.
You then have to remove the bulb. It may take a little bit of work to get it out, but you should be able to simply pull it out of the rest of the onion relatively easily. Since this is the part of the onion that makes you cry, you can simply set it aside and avoid chopping it. That will make your cook prep process much easier. But you don’t have to throw the bulb away completely. You can use it to flavor a soup or another dish or even use it for composting. There is no need to waste it simply because you don’t want to chop that section of the onion up.
Once you have removed the bulb, you are ready to continue chopping your onion.
You can turn the onion root-side down now and make a slice right in the middle of the remaining piece. At that point, you can simply start chopping an onion how you’re used to doing it. You will be amazed that you don’t feel a single tear coming on. Gone are the days of tearing up over the sink as you try to get your eyes to stop watering.
With this simple and easy tip, you can take your meals to the next level.
