We know you’re excited as we are, so here’s the secret – vinegar!

  • A Colander

Here are the super-easy steps to follow:

1) In a large bowl, pour 1 part of white vinegar to 5 parts water. That is about 1/2 cup of white vinegar to 2 1/2 cups of water.

2) Soak your fresh strawberries in the mixture for a few minutes. This will allow the vinegar to get rid of all the bacteria, mold spores, and dirt.

You might be surprised to see what your water and vinegar solution would look like after soaking the strawberries.

3) Allow your strawberries to dry completely. You can either place them in some paper towels or let them air dry in your colander. We want them to be completely dry so that no moisture would be left. Moisture causes the strawberries to build up molds.

4) Once dry, you can now place them in the refrigerator on top of a few paper towels. That should do the trick!

We know what you’re thinking. Don’t worry because your berries won’t taste like vinegar – we promise.

Best Practices in Storing Strawberries

Now that we have an idea on how we can extend the freshness of our strawberries, it’s time for us to know the best practices when it comes to storing our favorite berries. Here are a few tricks from The Kitchn:

  • Wash them immediately after going home from the store. We don’t want them to absorb all those moisture that will cause them to be mushy and moldy. You can immediately do the water and vinegar hack after going home.
  • Don’t remove the stems! Did you know that their stems help them have a longer shelf life?
  • Lastly, if you notice that some of your strawberries are already mushy and moldy, don’t hesitate to remove them. It’s way better to throw away a few berries than to let them ruin with the whole bunch.
