Kitchen mistakes happen. A lot. Even if you have been preparing meals for decades, you still can make a mistake.

The most renowned chefs aren’t exempt.

You’re a mom and you’re cooking dinner, then one of your kids asks for you. You come back and continue cooking.

You won’t even realize that you’ve salted your dish twice, or on some occasions, even three times.

You can honestly forget salting your food and come back doing it again. Some people even forget that they’re cooking until they smell something burning.

You cook your food, and then you taste it. Hmm, there’s something wrong…

It’s too salty.

Then you realize you’ve added salt two or even three times! Yikes!

This is definitely a kitchen emergency.

Of course, it would be such a waste to throw your food, right? Then, there’s this cooking hack that will save your over-salted food.

The only ingredient that you’ll need is Solanum tuberosum.

In other words, you’ll need a potato.

That’s right. The video claims that if you put one potato in your dish that has been over-salted, it’ll absorb the excess salt and will save your dish.

Very promising, so we’re curious, how does this work?

In the viral TikTok video, Vanessa posted:

“Have you ever accidentally put too much salt in your food and didn’t what to do?”

She then said that you just need to peel a potato and add it to your soup.

Then allow it to cook.

We then see her put a medium-sized peeled potato in her crockpot and allow her dish to cook.

Vanessa explained that the potato will absorb the excess salt. This cooking hack enabled her to serve her dish without anyone getting angry at her.

Of course, not everything you see on TikTok is real.

So is this cooking hack legit?

Apparently, this hack is nothing new.

There have been many people who have tried it and swear that it really does work.

According to Eatwell 101:

“This vegetable is rich in starch, a substance that readily absorbs excess salt. To do this, simply peel one or two potatoes.”

Then, as a bonus, we’ve learned that potatoes can desalinate soup and stews, while carrots can desalinate sauces.

Just don’t leave them in.

You have to remember to remove them once they have done their job. We don’t want to be eating salted potatoes, do we?
