One common tradition during any big holiday is to make a holiday ham—and we probably all have our own way of doing it. Typically speaking, you would throw your ham in the oven with some seasonings and sweeteners and leave it for a few hours. Holiday ham recipes may also include pineapples. Still, there’s always the risk of overcooking the ham and having it turn out to be too dry. And on the other hand, it’s always fun to use a slow cooker to really break foods down and develop all of their flavors.

With that in mind, we’re bringing you this brown sugar and pineapple ham recipe that you can make in your slow cooker.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 1 pre-cooked, spiral cut ham (either boneless or bone-in)
  • 3 1/2 cups of brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup of raw natural honey
  • 1 20 oz can of pineapple chunks (with the juice in)

Here’s what you have to do:

1. Get a large slow cooker—generally larger than six quarts—and pour about two cups of brown sugar in the bottom of it. Put the ham on top of the brown sugar and gently fan out the slices with your hands so the different flavors can set in.

2. Take your honey and gradually pour it over the ham, making sure it covers the entire thing evenly.

3. After that, open your can of pineapple and arrange the slices all around the sides of the slow cooker. Make sure to put some of the pineapple slices on top and pour all the juice in as evenly as possible as well.

4. Once that’s done, throw in the last cup and a half of brown sugar, covering the top of the ham with a nice caramel crust. After it’s topped, you’re ready to cover it. Cook it on low in your slow cooker for three and a half to four hours. Once it comes out, you’re ready to eat!

Cooking a holiday-style ham is generally easier than, say, preparing a turkey for Thanksgiving. Still, those who have never done it before sometimes run the risk of it not turning out exactly right. As this recipe shows, there’s nothing simpler than preparing your ham in a slow cooker to ensure it has a rich and sumptuous flavor. And who knows? You might end up liking this recipe so much that you have it even without any occasion. Happy cooking!
