It’s easy to forget to bring a knife to a picnic. Luckily, you don’t need one for opening a watermelon. Here’s a simple solution.

It sounds crazy, but it’s absolutely possible to cut open a watermelon without a knife, or even a sharp object.

Instead, all you need is something that you probably always have on you when you leave the home: a coin.

Yes, a coin. Just that and your hands.

(But even if you do have a knife – this is a trick that might still impress your guests.)

Here’s how it’s done. First, hold the coin upright with one hand so that the edge is facing the skin of the watermelon.

Then slam your other hand down onto the coin, and the coin should become embedded into the watermelon.

You might need to hit it a few times for it to become firmly wedged.

Then lift up the coin and press it into the edge of the hole that’s been made in the watermelon.

Try to keep the hole in a straight line as you keep on doing this across the watermelon – spinning the coin as you go.

Eventually, the line that you’ve made will reach the first wedge that you made.

It’ll take a couple of minutes to get to this point, but you will get there.

Then push the coin deeper into the cut and push down as you do so, so that the line gets deeper. Do this all along the line.

Once you’ve made this line as deep as possible, place your hand over it.

Then karate chop your hand onto the line.

It might take a few attempts, but eventually, you’ll split the entire thing in half.

And just like that, you and your other picnic participants will have plenty of watermelon to eat!

And if you’re also looking for an easy way to make a watermelon smoothie without a blender, then you’re in luck!

It’s also super easy.

All you need is a wire coat hanger, a knife (or a coin, as you now know) and a drill.

You may also want a plastic cup, but this is optional. This sounds like it could be messy, but it isn’t, promise!

Begin by cutting a hole in the side of the watermelon. It should be about the size of a dime.

Then fold out the coat hanger and bend it into a sort of very simple thin whisk shape. Put the ends of the coat hanger into the part of the drill where you’d normally put the drill bit and tighten it hard.

Then push the hanger into the hole in the watermelon and start drilling.

Over the next 30 seconds, keep on drilling and move the hanger around the inside of the watermelon so that the contents get entirely mushed up.

Then, cut the hole about three times as big.

If you’re using a plastic cup, cut it in half, as in so that the bottom of the cup makes a semicircle. Then stuff this cup half into the hole to make a spout. Then pour your smoothie out and enjoy.
