So, what exactly is shakshuka?

The dish’s name means ‘all mixed up’ and is thought to have originated in Yemen or Tunisia. Shakshuka is a hearty meal that consists of soft eggs cooked in tomato sauce with peppers, onions, herbs, and sometimes cheese.

For a visually stunning breakfast or brunch, this colorful dish certainly has a ‘wow’ factor when served in the pan it was cooked in.

Accompanied by some crusty bread or pita to dip into the egg, it’s simply delicious.

What you’ll need:

This recipe makes 4-6 servings.

  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 medium red bell pepper, chopped
  • 2 cans (14 oz.- 400g each) diced tomatoes
  • 2 tbsp (30g) tomato paste
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • chili flakes, to taste
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • 6 eggs
  • fresh parsley/cilantro for garnish

Heat the olive oil in a 12-inch frying pan over medium heat. Dice up the onion and add it to the pan.

Cook the onion for around 5 minutes, or until it softens. Then, add the garlic.

Add the diced bell pepper and let it simmer for a few minutes.

Stir in the tomato paste and add the diced tomatoes, then add the spices.

Add the chili powder and chili flakes (add less chili if you want less heat, or omit it entirely), cumin, paprika, and sugar.

To reduce the tomato sauce, allow the mixture to simmer over medium heat for 10-15 minutes. When the tomato begins to thicken, add salt and pepper to taste. You can adjust the flavor by adding more chili flakes if you want your shakshuka to be spicier, or add more sugar if you want it to be sweeter.

Now, we’re ready to crack the eggs into the tomato sauce.

Make ‘wells’ for your eggs in the sauce with a spoon, 1 in the middle, and 5 around the edges of the pan.

Now, carefully crack the eggs into the ‘wells’ that you made in the sauce – take care not to break the yolks!

Some people prefer their yolks runny, while others prefer them hard – just adjust the cooking time accordingly.

Cover the pan with a lid and simmer the eggs for 10-15 minutes, or until they are cooked to your preference.

Garnish the pan of shakshuka with fresh parsley or cilantro and serve immediately with crusty bread or pita.

This meal is slightly spicy and warming and great to eat with family and friends. It is also the perfect meal for a rainy day as dinner, breakfast, or lunch.
