When Buzzfeed polled their readers on the “weirdest food their state is known for,” they got some seriously weird responses.
We’re not sure this poll proves anything, but it will give you some insight into what people in these states think the folks around them are best at making in some unique way.
Scroll through and see if you agree with the weirdest food suggestion in your own state.
1. Alabama
There’s usually some vinegar in it as well to give is a tangy taste.
Looks unique AND sounds delicious!
2. Alaska
“Akutaq, otherwise known as Eskimo ice cream, is a combination of berries and some type of whipped fat. Traditionally caribou, moose, or walrus tallow, but a lot of people just use Crisco.”
It gives us some pause, but we’d certainly try it!
3. Arizona
But it doesn’t sound bad, that’s for sure!
The Buzzfeeder described it as “a bacon-wrapped hot dog smothered with pinto beans, onions, tomatoes, and mayonnaise.”
4. Arkansas
With butter, sugar, cocoa, flour, and milk, it’s not necessarily something you’d want to put on your meat, but it certainly sounds like something you could eat on a biscuit!
5. California
Alas, when we’ve traveled to the state, one thing has always struck us as strange – burritos with french fries in them.
It is pretty unique to Southern California – and specifically the San Diego area – though.
6. Colorado
They’re bull testicles. And sometimes you don’t realize that until after you’ve eaten them.
But at least they’re deep-fried.
7. Connecticut
You won’t have any trouble finding a good clam pizza there – and there’s a good chance the seafood will be fresh!
8. Delaware
It’s better if you just think of it as pork scraps. But if you must know, it’s ground-up pork liver and other “bits” mashed together with cornmeal, flour, and spices.
It comes as a semi-congealed loaf (yum), but then is sliced and usually pan-fried.
9. Florida
While it might not seem that creative, you will rarely find alligator on the menu in other states.
10. Georgia
“Pear salad here is made with canned pear halves, a spoonful of mayonnaise, shredded cheddar cheese, and topped with a maraschino cherry. These have been at every family gathering I’ve ever been to!”
We have to say, the cheese and mayo threw us for a loop!
11. Hawaii
But Buzzfeed chose for them and picked “Loco Moco.”
It’s just white rice, topped with a hamburger, a fried egg, and brown gravy – and it sounds delicious (although not very Hawaiian!).
12 Idaho
We were not aware that an ice cream potato existed but we were relieved to find out that even though it looks just like a potato, that’s actually vanilla ice cream dusted in cocoa powder.
Just add whipped cream, peanuts, Oreo bits, and chocolate sauce and you’re all set.
13. Illinois
“It’s two slices of Texas toast topped with two hamburger patties, french fries, and cheese sauce. There are plenty of protein variances: ham, chicken strips, etc. I’ve also seen one with chili added so it’s like chili cheese fries with an extra surprise underneath,” said a Buzzfeed respondent.
14. Indiana
Ok then!
“It’s a roast beef sandwich and mashed potatoes, both of which are completely COVERED in brown gravy and sugar cream pie.”
We’re calling bologna on the pie on top. Sugar cream pie is an Indiana thing, but we’ve seen no evidence of it being served on beef.
15. Iowa
Don’t get us wrong, it looks good, but we’d prefer our meat in larger pieces and with some spice. This looks like a sloppy joe without the slop (which, we suppose, should sound MORE appetizing).
Fun Fact: The sandwich was invented in 1924 by Dave Higgin at Ye Olde Tavern in Sioux City, Iowa.
16. Kansas
Now, don’t get us wrong, we think cinnamon is a great chili ingredient, so we get where you’re coming from. We just can’t imagine how we’d feel after that meal.
17. Kentucky
But in true Kentucky fashion, it’s not a salad until you’ve heated up bacon fat and drizzled it on your veggies.
18. Louisiana
It’s got pork liver and heart, but frankly, we’re never surprised by what’s in a sausage.
19. Maine
Maine’s dish dates back to the 19th century and it a blend of chocolate, potato, and coconut.
We’d try it.
20. Maryland
We certainly can’t argue that it’s weird!
The state even has a Muskrat Festival and Cooking Contest!
21. Massachusetts
In case you haven’t heard of it, it’s a sandwich made with peanut butter and marshmallow creme on white bread.
22. Michigan
@elliel45c6f7c8c said:
“Michigan doesn’t have any REALLY gross or weird foods. The only sort of strange item would be Cotton Candy Faygo, which I have a love-hate relationship with.”
23. Minnesota
But we kind of doubt anyone from Minnesota wrote in with this suggestion because they’ve been trying to disassociate themselves from the dish for a while!
24. Mississippi
“Banana sandwiches with mayo or pear salad (pear with mayo and shredded cheddar on top).”
To be fair, plenty of Mississippians were annoyed about the choice, saying they’ve never heard of such a thing. The best anyone has been able to do is trace it back to Dale Earnhardt Jr. who said he enjoys banana and mayonnaise on bread and that it’s “southern.”
Ok then.
25. Missouri
Considering Missouri’s past as a meatpacking district and the prevalence of innards and brains and such on even gourmet menus, we think those who wrote in could have done better.
26. Montana
Montana oysters are yet another “oyster” that’s not an oyster at all.
Maybe it’s best to leave your oyster-eating to the coastal regions.
27. Nebraska
You might also find them under the names bierocks, kraut kuche, or kraut bierocks.

28. Nevada
It’s just deep-fried squid though, which is something people eat everywhere.
Does the casino all-you-can-eat buffet not count as weird?
29. New Hampshire
Do any NH natives out there want to suggest something more unique?
30. New Jersey
It might be iconic, but we bet folks from NJ had better things in mind.
31. New Mexico
Apparently, you can get some spicy green chile topping on your vanilla frozen custard out west – and we’re all for this idea!
32. New York
With all the diversity in NY, some guy who wrote in “garbage plates” gets to choose NY’s weirdest food?
“Garbage plates! The base layer is mac salad, then french fries, then either hot dogs or cheeseburger, then hot meat sauce, THEN mustard, and onions. Crazy delicious blend of nonsense for those who don’t mind their food touching.”
We were born and raised in NY and have never even seen such a thing, but apparently, it’s a “delicacy” in Rochester.
33. North Carolina
Ok, but this is just a southern version of Deleware’s “scrapple” with a much worse name.
34. North Dakota
Apparently, hanging out with the Norwegians.
35. Ohio
“Ohio’s weird food is Skyline Chili, which is spaghetti with this thin chili meat sauce and shredded cheddar cheese. Also, you can add raw onions and red beans with some hot sauce on top. Absolutely delicious! It sounds gross but once you try it, you’re instantly addicted.”
Ok, we figured Skyline was just a classic and no longer considered weird, but at least it’s accurate.
36. Oklahoma
And yet again, you end up with a plate of testicles.
37. Oregon
From bacon toppings to CBD infusions, you really need to read the whole description before you bite into one of these!
38. Pennsylvania
If you like your food smothered, then this might be a new one to enjoy.
39. Rhode Island
They sound delicious and even if you’ve had stuffed clams before, the quahog is supposed to be something special.
40. South Carolina
“Here in the South Carolina, we often enjoy tomato and sweet Vidalia onion sandwiches with of course, Duke’s Mayo, salt and pepper, and pimento cheese.”
Well bless their hearts, that actually sounds pretty good.
41. South Dakota
There are regional variations on how to prepare it, but it sounds pretty straightforward, even though it has its own backstory.
42. Tennessee
Slug burgers are deep-fried meat and soy patties topped with pickles, mustard, and onion and served on a bun. No slugs though – they got the name because they used to cost a nickel.
(Oh, and Mississippians claim these too.)
43. Texas
Frankly, it still sounds bad, but if you’re a soda-lover you should give it a try and report back!
44. Utah
If they did indeed invent it, then thanks!
45. Vermont
The best part is that there’s no culinary stand-in for the snow. You actually NEED a bowl of snow to make it.
Apparently, all you need to do is heat up some syrup and drizzle it on snow.
Vermont, you win.
46. Virginia
Apparently, it is sacrilegious to put any condiments on them. So all we can say is those biscuits better be awesome.
47. Washington
Alas, the Pacific geoduck is just a species of very large saltwater clam.
Very large.
48. West Virginia
Frankly, that doesn’t seem very West Virginia-ish, but consider that they’re actually banned in some states and they do count as pretty weird.
49. Wisconsin
Venison hot sticks are a type of sausage that we’ll admit we’ve never seen elsewhere.
50. Wyoming
And it’s true that there’s not a lot of elk around.
Perhaps the weirdest part is that it substitutes for just about every other meat. Consider the “elk parmesan,” for example.
